Integrating Two-Dimensional Morphing and Pose Estimation for Face Recognition
نویسندگان
چکیده
Pose problem presents a challenge to face recognition methods because the shapes and features of the human face with large pose angle often appear quite different from the template. One approach to overcome this problem involves the estimation of the angle to which the face is rotated and then matches it to templates with the same pose. Another approach involves aligning the key facial features of the tested face to those of the template face before matching. However, these approaches can only achieve a moderate recognition rate, when the strict requirement of a low false alarm rate must be met. To accommodate the pose problem, this study integrates two-dimensional morphing with pose estimation. Two-dimensional morphing transforms various poses of a face image into a frontal view, thereby eliminating the center bias and pose variations and increasing the tolerance for pose estimation error. Experimental results show that two-dimensional morphing can significantly improve the performance of face recognition when dealing with severe pose variations. Combined with the pose estimation techniques, this integrated approach is capable of achieving very high recognition accuracy when the horizontal orientation is within ±45° and the vertical orientation is within ±30°. It also provides acceptably good performance with a horizontal orientation up to ±75° and vertical orientation up to ±60°.

In video surveillance, the viewing angle of face with respect to camera, called angular occlusion (also referred to as head pose) will limit system’s ability in face recognition. In this paper, a method for angular occlusion elimination in face images is proposed, which is based on image morphing. The proposed method models a frontal face from a batch of images with different head poses b...

1 Three-dimensional shape and two-dimensional surface reeectance contributions to face recognition: Abstract We measured the three-dimensional shape and two-dimensional surface reeectance contributions to human recognition of faces across viewpoint. We rst divided laser scans of human heads into their two-and three-dimensional components. Next, we created shape-normalized faces by morphing the ...

Three-dimensional (3D) face models can intrinsically handle large pose face recognition problem. In this paper, we propose a novel pose-invariant face recognition method via RGB-D images. By employing depth, our method is able to handle self-occlusion and deformation, both of which are challenging problems in two-dimensional (2D) face recognition. Texture images in the gallery can be rendered t...

Traditional automatic face morphing techniques tend to generate blurry intermediate frames when the two input faces differ significantly. We propose a new face morphing approach that deals explicitly with large pose and expression variations. We recover the 3D face geometry of the input images using a projection on a prelearned 3D face subspace. The geometry is interpolated by factoring the exp...

In this paper, a novel Patch Geodesic Derivative Pattern (PGDP) describing the texture map of a face through its shape data is proposed. Geodesic adjusted textures are encoded into derivative patterns for similarity measurement between two 3D images with different pose and expression variations. An extensive experimental investigation is conducted using the publicly available Bosphorus and BU-3...
